Dame Maggie Smith, one of Britain’s most celebrated actresses, has passed away peacefully at the age of 89. Known for her legendary roles in “Downton Abbey” and the “Harry Potter” series, her sons shared the heartbreaking news in a statement issued by their publicist Clair Dobbs.
“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Dame Maggie Smith. She died peacefully in hospital surrounded by loved ones. Her family and close friends are devastated by the loss,” the statement reads. “We are incredibly grateful to the staff at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for their compassionate care during her final days.”
Born in 1934 in Ilford, Smith’s career spanned decades, starting from her stage debut with the Oxford University Dramatic Society. She later gained prominence with roles such as Desdemona in “Othello” opposite Laurence Olivier. Smith won her first Academy Award in 1969 for “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie” and her second in 1978 for “California Suite.”
Dame Maggie continued to captivate audiences throughout her life, particularly with younger generations, through her role as Professor McGonagall in the “Harry Potter” films and as Violet Crawley in “Downton Abbey,” a role that earned her three Emmy Awards.
Maggie Smith’s grace, wit, and undeniable talent made her a beloved figure in entertainment, and she leaves behind an extraordinary legacy. She is survived by her two sons and five grandchildren.
