National Geographic’s Top Travel Trend for 2025: Embracing Fun Experiences
In an exclusive interview with dailyon, National Geographic editor-in-chief Nathan Lump revealed that “fun” is the hottest revival trend for travel in 2025. As the brand prepares to unveil its annual Best of the World list, Lump emphasized the importance of joyful and exciting travel experiences amid today’s global challenges.
Joyful Journeys Amidst Challenges
“This year, understanding the complexity of the times that we live in, we wanted to lean into things that are really fun,” Lump noted. He expressed the desire to tap into the joy of travel and the excitement of discovery, which is crucial in a world filled with uncertainty.
Guadalajara, Mexico: A Musical Extravaganza
Among the featured destinations is Guadalajara, Mexico, renowned for its vibrant mariachi festival. This festival takes place every August and September, with around 500 bands performing in the historic Teatro Degollado and public squares. Lump remarked, “The streets come alive with music. That’s going to bring a lot of joy,” inviting travelers to immerse themselves in the lively atmosphere.
Boise, Idaho: Celebrating Basque Heritage
Moving on to the United States, Boise, Idaho will celebrate the return of the Jaialdi festival in 2025, marking its comeback after a 10-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Basque Block will host daily street parties filled with dancing, music performances, and even a Sports Night featuring wood-chopping and wagon-lifting competitions. This vibrant celebration promises to be a cultural feast for visitors.
Italy’s Monasteries: A Zen Retreat
In contrast to the energetic festivities, Italy’s Cenobitic monasteries offer visitors a chance for a monastic stay. These ancient sites, dating back to the Middle Ages, welcome individuals of all religious affiliations, providing a unique opportunity for reflection and soulful connections. Lump describes this experience as “a very Zen kind of fun,” allowing travelers to connect with themselves and others in a meaningful way.
Cork, Ireland: A Cultural Renaissance
The Irish city of Cork, known for its vibrant culture and warm locals, is undergoing an exciting urban renaissance, thanks to a multi-billion-dollar development plan set to be completed by 2028. Lump highlights that Cork has “always been a fun city,” making it an appealing destination for travelers seeking rich cultural experiences.
Popular Destinations with New Attractions
In addition to these emerging locales, well-known cities like Bangkok and Los Angeles are also on the list, offering fresh attractions for visitors. In Bangkok, the ongoing restoration of the Wat Chaiwatthanaram temple—a 17th-century Buddhist monument—will allow tourists to connect with the spirituality of the site without the overwhelming crowds typically found at other major religious landmarks, such as Angkor Wat in Cambodia.
Meanwhile, Los Angeles is set to transform Crenshaw Boulevard with landscaped community spaces and over 100 commissioned works by Black artists. Although the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, founded by “Star Wars” creator George Lucas, won’t open until 2026, the anticipation adds to the city’s vibrant cultural scene.
Haida Gwaii: Cultural Immersion in British Columbia
Lump’s favorite on the list is Haida Gwaii, a stunning collection of islands off the coast of British Columbia. Visitors here can enjoy a truly immersive cultural experience, including whale-watching excursions and opportunities to meet local Indigenous artists. This destination promises to be both educational and enriching.
Embracing Slow Travel
As the fast-paced nature of modern life takes its toll, Lump advocates for slow travel, which allows individuals to connect with nature and take a step back. An exciting development in this realm is the revival of Malaysia’s Eastern & Oriental Express luxury train service. Through the “Wild Malaysia” trips, guests can learn about critically endangered Malayan tigers and participate in wildlife photography classes.
Adventure Awaits: Hiking and Rock Climbing
For those seeking adventure, the list features thrilling activities such as hiking volcanoes in Guatemala and rock climbing in India. The Volcán de Fuego near Antigua, one of the world’s most active volcanoes, offers stunning views from its neighboring volcano, Acatenango. Additionally, the Suru Valley in northern Ladakh has become a hub for rock climbing, culminating in the annual Suru Outdoor Fest held in August and September.
Greenland: A New Frontier
Greenland is another highlighted destination, now more accessible thanks to a new international airport and increased flights to North America. Lump describes it as “one of my favorite places I’ve ever been,” offering visitors a chance to understand the pressing changes our planet is facing.
Kanazawa, Japan: A Peaceful Alternative
Lastly, National Geographic has chosen Kanazawa, Japan, as an alternative to the heavily touristed Kyoto. Known for its gold leaf production, Kanazawa allows travelers to experience Japan’s traditional culture in a quieter, less overwhelming environment, showcasing the country’s rich heritage.
