Unimpressed Locals
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s recent arrival in Portugal has not generated much excitement among locals, who express that they are used to “richer and more famous people” purchasing properties in the region. Their presence seems to have little impact on the community, which is accustomed to high-profile residents.
A High-End Market
A local estate agent, who has worked in Alentejo for decades, estimates that the couple likely spent over four million euros on a property within one of its exclusive resorts. The agent noted that homes in these areas typically range from four to twenty million euros.
“Recent years have seen A-listers from the States buying homes or plots in these closed environments,” the agent explained. While there are rumors that Harry and Meghan are among the latest buyers, it remains unclear whether they have acquired an existing home or a plot for a new build.
Little Impact Expected
Despite the couple’s celebrity status, locals are unlikely to roll out the red carpet. The estate agent commented, “We have much richer and more famous people buying here for sure. I think they will have zero impact, to be honest.” He added that if someone like Jeff Bezos were to move into the area, there might be a different story, but not with Harry and Meghan.
A Contrast in Lifestyle
The contrast between the wealthy residents of gated estates and the local community is evident. In the village of Melides, close to the exclusive resorts, locals enjoy leisurely afternoons playing cards and sharing beers in small, family-run cafes.
The owner of a local seafood restaurant chuckled at the notion of British royalty settling in, stating, “The rich from the resorts don’t eat with the poor.” This sentiment reflects the division between the affluent newcomers and the established local culture.
Privacy and Appeal
Local business owners recognize that the area’s appeal lies in its privacy, which continues to attract A-listers. While the influx of wealthy buyers may reshape parts of the community, the enduring lifestyle of the locals remains unchanged, highlighting the stark differences between the two groups.
